Event Coverage on Facebook, Brands on Facebook (assignment 4/16. 4/18)

Major news outlets are no strangers to social media. Especially when it comes to breaking news. Should you chose to follow them, or like them on facebook they'll often post with breaking news and updates on current stories for people to read. This allows people to stay informed without necessarily needing to look for information as well as makes it easier and more accessible for people to generate web traffic to major news websites, since often the posts include links to the full story, pictures, background information or other stories about the same matters. Similar occurances often take place for established events such as elections or sports. Anyone on social media during an election year can attest to the amounts of news coverage about such events. Coverage both prior, during and after a given event. There is often information given before an event, "live" coverage and discussion/analysis after. This allows people to be involved, informed or aware of events without necessarily needing to participate in them.

Brands also are familiar with the facebook world when it comes to creating "news" about their products or services. Brands use facebook as a way to inform people of new products, deals or so-called opprotunities that users can take advantage of. An example of this is Lays potato chips who felt it necessary to advertise the three new flavors that they've recently come out with. This was presented as breaking news even though it's something as simple as the flavor of chips they are currently offering. This way they are able to spread word of their product even farther as well as generate involvement by asking feedback as well as people's opinions on the best flavor. This process allows brands like Lays to integrate themselves into people's lives and therefore gain access and means to spread more word about their products and deals by creating news for people to take note of.

Event Social Media Reporting

Social media has now become people's main way of obtaining news. Not only this but social media have now made it possible for anyone to be a reporter. Now whenever you see a news report on television about a breaking story it is usually accompanied by a video or photo taken from a passersby cell phone. Stories are even now able to be followed via twitter or facebook. These stories are more accessible than ever when anyone has the ability to be a possible news outlet. News feeds on facebook or twitter are often filled with articles written about current events. Now it is even possible for people to comment or communicate with one another about their ideas or thoughts on any given matter. The news is now at our fingertips instantly. Articles are accompanied by links to similar topics and issues or to further readings on the matter. It's also convenient for people to be able to access information or news at their own pace or whenever they want. This is especially helpful for people who are unable to or have no desire to access other news outlets such as the news on television or newspapers. It allows people to access what information they wish to be informed about as well versus sitting through news reports on, for example, animal shelters when someone only wants to know about the headlining story.

Events are also now more widely spread via social media as well. With a few clicks someone can create or promote an event or invite whomever of their friends connected to social media as well. This creates an easy and fast way to promote events or educate people on events. In addition to this it is now possible to see who else is attending any given event or how many people are attending, what groups are associated with it and where to go to see more events of the same group, person, or organization or more information on issues connected to a given event. As with the news it's all instantaneous and easily accessible. In some instances even social media give the option of incorporating events days and times onto people's personal schedules.

Social media has made it possible for people to access news, report news and access knowledge about events at their own convenience and pace. It's also made this easy to access at any given time and instantaneously.
